1st of may a new golf beginning

i love the start of a new month
1. it just feels like a new beginning , a time to restart and refresh, reassess my situation and figure how to move on and improve
2. i get pocket money heh heh
3. it means the 4th is coming, love love

the may day charity is always played on May 1 at SICC. tomorrow i will be playing with mummy. gonna have better thought processes and increased confidence when i play tomorrow. think positive and hit positively on every shot. execute it with confidence. no deceleration on the downswing

i really need to see things in perspective and get more serious. no excuses for that time of the month

-soften grip pressure, keeping thumb resting on the club instead of digging into the grip
-turn right heel down and inwards on the downswing
-keep wrist angle at impact instead of letting wrists release (the arms rotate not the wrists)
-and finally, feel how i want to hit the shot before executing it positively

awesome score! here i come !

i believe that MAY will be a good month.

different stress personalities

this month's 'shape' magazine has an article on 'what's your stress personality?'. It didn't occur to me until the end of the article that I'm a different stress type in different situations or even a combination/accumulation of stress types. here's an outline of the 4 stress types and you can figure out yours too.

1. never feel anxiety- until it manifests as mystery aches and pains
= in detach and-and-shut-down mode
(tend to turn to sleep and comfort foods)

medical reason:
nervous system functions at chronically low levels so you become emotionally flat.

solution:
keep a mood journal. Regularly jot down your feelings and you can better recognise when pressure is building so you can relax before you fall sick. also, try yoga to help you tune in to your body

2.under stress you panic thinking about everything that needs to get done
= in overdrive
(prone to insomnia and colds)

Medical reason:
overactive sympathetic nervous system (part that turns on the brain's emergency responses) pumps out more cortisol (the stress hormone) that the body can process so you are on constant alert.

Solution:
do aerobics exercises like running or kickboxing to help you blow off steam because it lowers cortisol levels.

3. under stress you have a short burst of energy but burn out.
=dash-and-crash personality

Medical reason: parasympatheric response (the part that turns off the fight-or-flight reaction) kicks into overdrive and suppress the chemicals that keep you alert which then lead to fatigue.

Solution:
Centre meals around protein rich food like eggs, its and chicken as they are high in the amino acid that's needed to make you feel alert.

4. Under stress you are fearful and avoid confrontation
= fried-and-frazzled type
(higher risk of hives and allergies)

Medical reason:
Insufficient amounts of the stress hormone cortisol and a spike in norepinephrine (chemical that keeps you alert) leave you feeling overwhelmed and nervous. It also triggers inflammation.

Solution: eat plenty of foods high in omega3 like fish and walnuts ti reduce inflammation. Do at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise such as pirates three times a week to ramp up your energy.

In my usual life I am a number 4. I dislike confrontations and always want to be peaceful. But in golf I used to be a 1 but maybe I'm more of 3 now. When I first started on this journey 3 months ago I was uber optimistic and had no stress so I was kind of in detached and shut down, until I started to ache in my feet, my arms, my wrist.

When I was studying in melbourne I exhibited a lot of type 2. I'd be panicking all the time. Especially when exams were coming up or assignment due dates were near. it showed because I would bite my nails till they were so short they hurt. HAHA

These days I feel more of a 3. I get really energetic and then I crash. It might be because I've gotten hungry or my energy was due to a sugar High. energy is good !

golfing audi R8 style

was browsing through 'exquisite' magazine and I saw this write up on the audi R8. I know absolutely nothing about cars and it puzzles me that the R8 has a V8 engine but can also have a V10 engine. But I do know beauty when I see it.

I'm actually a mercedes benz girl but the picture really caught my eye and gave me a good idea for an analogy in golf when I read that the audi R8 combines 'direct gasoline injection, dry sumptuous lubrication and a high revving concept'.

my analytical mind developed from marketing class at melbourne university makes me think that the big words coupled with the 'sexy' picture is meant to elicit feelings of class and power because expensive luxury items such as cars are largely emotional purchases and you pay such a high price because of the image that comes with the car.

The point is that I relate the audi R8 to golfing because we should aim to look good when we play golf and back it up with sound mechanics and skill just like the R8.

my dad came up with the analogy that your golf swing is like a car. It needs to run smoothly and it needs all the parts to work together in order to do so. like how the car needs all 4 wheels to be turning smoothly, we need to use 4 limbs to work together in a smooth rhythm to hit the ball well. similar to the car the needs all its internal parts to carry out their functions, the muscles in our body must also do their part in order for our limbs to move in sync and smoothly

positive image in golf

projecting a positive image of yourself is all about appearance, behaviour and communication. but if I were to sum it up in one word it would be communication because the way you dress and behave is also communicating who you are to the people around you. Your image is the way you market yourself.

At university we often talked about branding ourselves or thinking of ourselves as a brand. think perez hilton and everything about him and his website that makes him so unique.

positive image is important when going for interviews but it is also very important on the golf course and at the golf club.

I aim to project a friendly but hardworking image when I play golf but I know that sometimes I go into this moody zone and look really unfriendly and unapproachable. I'm still looking for a way to be cheerful when I'm demoralized without having to cover up how I feel.

if I were a golfing celebrity then maybe I'd have to be all smiles all the time but I'm sure some people would call me 'so fake'. You can never please everyone.

good looking people are often more marketable in terms of jobs but in golf its more important to be well groomed, dress smartly and neatly, have confidence and carry yourself well on and off the course in order to gain respect and recognition.

To leave a positive impression on golfers at the golf club and on the golf course, be consistent in the way you portray yourself. That is, dress as you want to be seen. Talk in a way (tone and volume) that you want to be heard. Act in a way you want to be remembered.

We can always dream of being admired from afar and that is possible if you leave people with a good impression.

to top it off, the most important accessory is a big big smile. Share it with all.

funny story: don't lick your golf balls

there was a 65 year old man in Ireland who played golf everyday and experienced lethargy and abdominal discomfort, had dark urine and jaundice. He was diagnosed with acute hepatitis.

It was later discovered that this old man often licked his golf balls to clean them, exposing himself to the weed killer used on the greens.

This led to the golfer related hazard called ' golf ball liver'

The doctor ordered him to stop using his tongue to clean golf balls and his symptoms faded.

Funny part is that the next time the greens were sprayed with weed killer, he resumed licking his golf balls to challenge himself for a month. Obviously, his hepatitis symptoms returned.

HAHA its quite unlikely anyone I know would do that. But sometimes people just need reminding....

momoko ueda

wow momoko !!
a golfing cartoon could be made out of her cos she's so cute! her name and style just seems so suitable for those japanese cartoons that are dubbed over in english. can't imitate the type of voice in text

i discovered her website and i really love the bright colors. i think you'd love it too so check it out http://www.momokoueda.com/en/profile/index.html">here she has videos of her swing and i was watching it and its good for my mind (this is what someone said about me when he was watching me swing) lol

funny story: monkeys are so fail

the only other 'people' i can think of who loves sweet drinks as much as my family are the monkeys on the golf course. they have developed this amazing ability to sniff out your sweet drinks and snacks tucked well hidden away in your golf bag and buggy. it's not like we're carrying those packet drinks that are like in those plastic bags with the string to carry it in. they are in plastic bottles !!!

the funny thing is that this male monkey (i saw his balls) reached his hand inside the open pocket of my golf bag today and swiped my 100plus bottle. silly monkey actually bit a hole through the plastic bottle. but too bad... it was only water inside !! hahahahhas

the only time is now - it's your present

too often we think we'll do something after we lose weight, after we play better golf, after we do something else or another. it's like you always have to wait till you're better to do something. I was like that.

i'm waiting till i shoot better scores to play with other people. waiting to break 80 to book that flight to Shanghai. waiting till i'm happy with my iron shots to go on holiday. waiting waiting waiting. always waiting and then waiting some more. waiting to sleep before midnight before waking up at 6am. waiting to feel motivated before practicing harder. it's as though i'm reinforcing the idea that i'm not good enough.

sports psychology books remind you to play in the present. in golf you can only think one shot at a time. every shot presents an opportunity to change your mindset. changing the way you feel only takes a second, its a mental choice to smile when something bad happens, it's a decision to keep calm in a frustrating situation.

Today i learnt in a new way how to love myself in the present regardless of what happens. i love myself when i shoot 93, i love myself when i knife my pitches, i love myself when i top my irons, i love myself when i miss simple putts. i'm understanding better the concept of loving myself unconditionally and bringing it into my golfing journey.

I shall not live in fear anymore, i live in LOVE

the golf course is not the driving range

on the driving range, i am always reminded to focus on having a good rhythm. somehow, i get distracted on the golf course and my rhythm gets haywire. i'm so preoccuppied with trying to swing it faster or get good contact that i forget that i need a good rhythm in my golf swing in order to do so. it's so logical right: bringing what you've been working on off the course into your round of golf and trust in it.

i think thats the main aspect that has been hindering my game and just a simple reminder from someone can help me wake up and focus on the right thing before hitting the golf ball. good thoughts of good rhythm= good swing

this simple piece of advice helped me score 39 on the back nine that day. yay :) cheers for rhythm in everything you do

go with the flow, keep up the momentum. remember your rhythm and you will strike the ball well

give encouragement to a golfer day

wow this is my 66th post ! One sixth my goal of having 365 posts by the end of this year. Go go shuyan ! At least if I don't achieve my play golf goals, I can achieve a different sort of golfing goal. Doesn't really seem like such a big deal but hopefully by the end of this year I can use this blog for some monetary purposes

anyway, my message is that it's always great to play with encouraging golfers. we can do with alot more helpful friendly gracious people and less of poor golfing partners. i don't mind people who don't play well but please don't slam your clubs. i've really learnt to control my temper alot better. people ask me why i smile when i hit a bad shot or why i laugh when i miss the putt. its my way of knowing that even if i don't hit a good shot now, i will next time. just trust in whatever i'm doing. although there are so many times when i'm not even sure what it is i'm trusting in, i just have the belief that it's all coming together soon and hard work definitely pays off

so, everyday can be 'give encouragement to a golfer day' ! you don't need to give swing tips or anything, just be a pleasant playing partner. smile often and don't whine. tell them that they're doing a good job and not to give up. i believe in the saying that 'you get what you give'. be nice to other golfers and they will eventually be more encouraging to you too. of course you can't expect that everyone will do so. but you get my point

i'm really grateful to all the people who have encouraged me all this while. you've really kept me going :)

golf, would you be there for me?

would you be there by redwan ali

because golf isn't human, i think golf wouldn't be like a lover who can run away and stop loving you. but because it isn't human, it can't express its feelings or do anything to make you feel loved. But you can believe in golf to always be there, to provide comfort and reassurance at any time. Whether you feel blue, feel good, golf will stay true to you. it will always be that one true sport where you compete against yourself and you can only blame yourself or feel frustrated. Yupp if Redwan Ali was singing this song to ask if golf would always be there, Golf would reply in a no-nonsense tone "of course i will"

for easy reference to the song lyrics:

If I were blue, would you be there for me,
And whisper in my ears that's ok.
Would you stand by me, let me hold you tight,
And say you love me one more time.

If I feel good, would you slow dance with me?
And touch my lips with tender loving care?
Would you die for me?
Would you run with me?
And never look back..

Would you be there to love, to be with me?
Would you swear that your love is always true?
Would you say that you'll always be the one,
to take my breath away?

Would you be there to love, to be with me?
Would you swear that your love is always true?
Would you say that you'll always be the one,
to take my breath away?

Would you be there..

If I am away, would you still think of me?
And wish that you could hold me now?
Would you die for me?
Would you run with me, all the way?

Would you be there to love, to be with me?
Would you swear that your love is always true?
Would you say that you'll always be the one,
to take my breath away?

Would you be there to save my soul tonight?
Would you swear that your love is always true?
Would you say that you'll always be there to kiss my pain away?
Would you be there to love, to be with me?
Would you swear that your love is always true?
Would you say that you'll always be the one,
to take my breath away?

Would you be there to save my soul tonight?
Would you swear that your love is always true?
Would you say that you'll always be there to kiss my pain away?

funny story: hobbling down the buggy

aching aching after running so much on saturday, i went to play 18 holes on sunday afternoon and although i was lucky enough to be sitting a buggy, i think it would have been such a comical sight to see me hobbling up and down the buggy to get to my ball cos everytime i step off the buggy, i'd be like " ahh ahhh ahhh pain" cos my thighs were hurting haha

the cool thing about muscle aches is that it actually feels good when it hurts while playing golf. like when i turn and i feel my waist aching (i don't even know what they're called, cos they have never ached before), its like yeah ! i know i am turning in my swing hahahahahha

longer drives and iron shots: do plank exercises for core strength

Core strength and stability exercises can improve your golf fitness and reduce the risk of injury. Your core muscles are the centre and foundation of your golf swing and getting a stronger core increases your power and adds distance to your long shots. It also helps you become more stable in your short game so you are more precise and controlled when pitching and chipping onto the green.

I have never thought of myself as a person with a weak core. but when i first started doing planks (which is a very  basic core strenghtening exercise) i really struggled and could hardly hold my bum up. On saturday, it was my first time doing a 7 minute plank and i was quite amazed that i could actually survive the entire 7 minutes without giving up. it wasn't easy but i definitely performed much better than i would have done 6 months ago.

wanna drive longer off the tee? wanna hit longer with your irons?

then try doing planks at least 3 times a week. you should see improvements within a month. you'll feel stronger when you set up to the ball and the backswing becomes more controlled.

if you've never done a plank before, this is how you start

full plank looks like this

1. Balance on your elbows and toes, while keeping your body in a straight line.
-focus on those core muscles (around the tummy area) to make sure you lift your bum up.
**don't arch your back

you can do it sideways to a mirror to check

2.hold for 30seconds
3.repeat 2-3 times

4.slowly build up your strength till you can hold for 1 minute or even 1.5 minutes

if you have difficulty doing the full plank, start out with the half plank instead where you balance on your elbows and knees while keeping your back in a straight line.

you may need to find the right weight distribution so you feel the strain in your core area instead of in your shoulders. i tend to lean forward to balance myself on my shoulders, but that is incorrect, if you are doing that, you might want to try shifting your weight more onto your toes.

a more advanced plank is the side plank
side plank looks like this

1.Lie on your side with elbow and toes on the ground

2.lift yourself up to form a plank with body in a straight line
-make sure your hips are not resting on the ground.

3.hold for 30 seconds

don't  miss out on the opportunity to impress your playing partners with your improved drives and iron shots. Read this http://www.nashuaplainfield.k12.ia.us/highschool/ath/golf/prac/fitness/core_flex.pdf">article for more exercises on improving core strength and flexibilitydocument

awesome premier team training

first time experiencing physical training since i joined the premier team and the first time i've woken up with such an aching body in a long time. the last time was probably when i went for a kickboxing class quite a few years back. i've almost forgotten how aching in my abs, back, thighs and hips feel like

its really cool because i'm aching in the parts of my abs and thighs that have never ached ever IN MY LIFE
which means that those smaller muscles are getting stronger !

all that suffering is not for nothing ! i will be able to hit the ball farther and better soon :)

what's wrong with optimism?

I always start my day with a lot of optimism. I start my golf practice really optimistic. I tee off the first hole still hopeful that I will play a really good round of golf.

I'm always hoping for a miracle in my golf game. But I find that the higher my level of optimism, the harder I fall at the end of the game, or even before I finish the game.

I always toe the iron shots or top the wood shots. By the time I hit a ball that doesn't cross the water or goes out of bounds, I'm emotionally shagged and my optimism level just drops by half its original amount.

But the biggest thing to focus on is that we are a miracle. Don't keep looking for a miracle because you're experiencing it everyday

money (that's what i want)

such a catchy tune and the lyrics just basically repeat with the phrase "thats what i want". this can be so easily transformed into a song about anything else you want. like for me it's to play good golf consistently whee

i really love the background beat that just makes you want to shake your booty. it's a real pick me up although the video is quite confusing cos the girl doesn't look happy when she's talking about wanting money and i have no idea what the pianist is actually doing.

but anyway... it doesn't mean i don't want money

water is of utmost importance in golf

water is something you cannot do without on the golf course. I don't mean the water features around the golf course. Those are dangers and really can make me extremely nervous when I'm not playing well.

I mean water is of utmost importance in the golf game because it is essential to stay hydrated. Our body is 70percent water and you need all of it to function properly.

especially in singapore where its really REALLY hot and gets so humid when its about to rain or just after a storm. It can really feel like you're in a sauna or rather a steam bath. Its the same for all other outdoor sports too. sweat just trickles down your face and appears on your arms and legs. Even my eye area sweats which fogs up my sunglasses. Sweat even gets onto my eyelashes and rubs against the lenses that makes it even more blurry.

you lose water by the bucketloads so you have to make sure you drink plenty of water to stay hydrated so your brain can function properly to analyse your ball position, distance, wind etc. And also you need to be able to fire up all those muscles to hit the ball the right distance instead of feeling lazy and chucking at the ball so it lands 10meters short.

I also feel that I am less likely to get sunburnt when I have drank enough water.

drink plenty of water during your golf game. I usually sip every 3 holes and drink more or more frequently as I feel myself getting dehydrated .

Its worth it even if it makes your bag heavier. You don't want to be in the of golf course, thirsty and panting like a dog with no source of clean water nearby. It's a really yuck situation.

mental struggle

sometimes i wake up and i have this struggle in my mind whether to get up and start the day or continue lying in bed so the time passes by and i don't have to think about anything

i look forward to the time when my posts are all about happy golfing times, playing good scores etc etc
but i feel my iron shots are getting better now. today my shots are straight but i often underclub. it just doesn't feel as nice to hit a longer club for the same distance. its these things that make me doubt my choice of new clubs.

i think i have stiff shafts on my clubs which thereotically means that when i am able to master them and play well with them, i'll be at a totally new HIGH level muah hahahahaha
thats the main idea motivating me and keeping me going now !

posts from mobile phone

my posts work fine when I used my phone but yesterday was a different story. I had all these things I wanted to write about that I usually do on my phone when I'm having lunch but nooo..... Yesterday I couldn't get the page to fully load and therefore I couldn't type directly into blogger

Smart me
i'm learning more and more everyday

always heed the lightning siren

if you also live in sunny singapore, my favourite country, you would be updated with the recent crazy weather here. it's hot and sunny in the afternoon but come 3.30pm, the dark clouds just appear from nowhere. at 4.00pm, there might be a bit of sunshine. within a minute, at 4.01pm, it'll start to rain. and the past week or so has graced us with the magical THUNDERSTORM..... you'll see lightning flashing through the clouds and hear thumber, even the occassional crack of when you know the lightning's really close by.

today, i learnt never to doubt the siren to close the course. megan and i got stuck at the halfway house for an hour. and it was probably the most frightening one hour of our lives. i'll never think of lightning in the same way again.

it must have been one of the worst thunderstorms of late because the lightning rating was 29 !!!!when the reading reaches 4, they already close the course !

we could see the lightning flashes in front of us, to the left and to the right. no way were we going to step onto the golf course. we thought that the halfway house would be the safest place to be. it would have been even better if they had food and drinks there but all the staff had already left.

just as we were in the midst of taking photos, lightning crashed just 20m next to the halfway house. there was a giant ball of light in the middle of the tee box next to us. CLAP ! the thunder was so loud and piercing that my right ear which was nearer to it hurt. megan and i hid under the table screaming because it really was the most frightening thing that has ever happened to me.

i bet you'll never forget it if you have such a close encounter with lightning. so i'll never underestimate it when i hear them close the golf course because of lightning. this is my advice: you wouldn't want to be NEXT to the ball of light if the lightning really crashes next to you. it really is no joke so if you hear the siren that will be followed by the announcement " we are sorry, play is suspended until further notice", take cover immediately !! don't leave anything up to chance

golfing makes you WILD !!

isn't this picture sooo cute !! it gave me a new idea for my next photo album ! golfing makes you go WILD ! wild like the animals in the safari/zoo lol
it's gonna take some time to complete this album cos photo shop skills we be needed but i'm really excited to see the cool effect i can get from my room. be excited !!! cos i am :)

i'm actually super excited to get started with this project but i've got to sleep ! got a game at 805 tomorrow morning  !

its a new start for my golf training spree !! no more lazy 12 hour sleeps please

golfers ! protect your scalp from the sun !

The sun can be very damaging to the skin and thats a known fact. Women are especially concerned about protecting from the sun because of the UVA and UVB rays that can cause sunburns, early aging and eek skin cancer.

You are exposed to secondary UV exposure on cloudy days, in the shade and even while indoors. But often when playing golf, it is out in the hot sun and that's exposure to outdoor UV rays. We know the harmful damage the sun can do to our skin but often neglect the damage that can be done to our SCALP !

this is an important issue for men because an unhealthy scalp can lead to bald spots and thinning. it's also undesirable for women to have thinning hair. who doesn't want luscious long flowing hair that looks like you just came from a shampoo advertisement ?

Here's some tips on how to protect your scalp

1.Protect yourself !!
Apply sun protection prior to each time you are going to be in direct or indirect contact with the sun. Try using a sunblock with SPF 15 or higher. Apply to your face, neck and ears and don't neglect your scalp if you have bald spots or if your hair is thinning.
(hmm applying sunblock to a healthy scalp does not sound very feasible to me, but just do as you deem fit

2.Take cover !!
My parents always remind me to practice in shady spots on the golf course. Try to wear clothing that expose as little to your skin as possible and wear a wide brimmed hat for additional protection. (i seldom see people wearing WIDE BRIMMED HATS these days and they don't look especially good on men but err a baseball cap should do fine, just remember to put sunblock on your neck and ears)

3. Avoid the afternoon sun
The sun is the brightest 10am and 2pm so try to avoid direct exposure to sunlight during this time as the UV rays are the strongest

Don't forget about your head the next time you prepare for your golf game and hope you have fun !

right sized shoes for good balance in the golf swing

good balance is essential in the golf swing because you need it to get good weight transfer and contact the ball with your body in the right positions

i've often heard that flexibility is very important in golf. but it cannot be stressed more that balance is even more important because you can be very flexible and be able to do a backward bridge, but if you have horrible balance, you will be just as likely to get injured.

from my experience, i've learnt that your feet size changes with your height and body weight. i found it strange that i used to buy size 5 footjoy shoes but suddenly changed to a size 6 after going to melbourne to study. after wearing the size 6 for about a year, i moved back to singapore and found that they started to get looser and looser. at first i just thought it was because my socks were getting thinner over time after washing. but then i realised that i was getting smaller/thinner. i find it so much easier to swing in my old size 5 shoes.

i know golf shoes can be really expensive and its hard to find one that is absolutely perfect. make sure you try on your golf shoes after reading this and check that they are the right size. if they are too big, your feet will be slipping and sliding inside the shoe and cause you to lose balance. or not, you will be putting too much pressure on your feet to try and maintain your feet position in the shoes. furthermore, wearing shoes that are too big on the golf course might cause you to lose your balance not just in the swing, but when you're walking on slopes and hills. you might twist your ankle. ouch.

in short, make sure your golf shoes are the right size. invest in a good pair and you will find you have better balance in the swing :)

lightning struck my house: a new beginning

can you believe it !!! my house got struck by lightning !!!
my dad says its not very common for it to happen but i think this is already the second time it's happened since i've moved in more than 10 years ago. i must add that i've never heard it happen to anyone before.

anyway i feel like this incident is a sign. sign that things are going to change. no matter what happens, it'll change for the better. be it my golf or my relationships. its a sign of good luck !

today i played an OK golf game. at least i hit more decent shots today and i managed 4 greens on regulation. great improvement from my 1 green on regulation last week lol

after the lightning strike, i have new found determination and enthusiasm. i believe i am able to improve my golf and i am committed to improve my golf. i trust in the process of improvement.

no more feeling demoralised. no more being depressed. no more mood-iness. no more crying. no more being frustrated. only hope and happiness.

thank you daddy for always encouraging me and being there for me through my ups and downs. daddy is da best !!

check out this book about probabilities. they write about the chances of getting struck by lightning. what about your HOUSE being struck by lightning ??

silly bee thought i was a plant !!

i took pictures for my latest photo album "in memory of the times in the trees" today
go to my facebook page to view all the pictures. i decided that i would only put 5 photos in each album because if not i'd run out of poses and facial expressions (especially because i want to smile in all my pictures)

this album is meaningful because it'll remind me never to give up on myself even when i keep getting into situations in the trees because i can always laugh at myself afterwards.
ps: i think i actually did make those faces when i was playing, just that no one was around to see

anyway, see how i'm wearing green shorts ??
the funny story i want to share is that there was this bee that kept flying around my shorts and my thighs thinking i'm some sort of plant when i was taking the photos!!! i don't dislike bees, i just don't want to get stung by them.

hard work part 2

its 6am and i'm still awake. Can't get to sleep because i'm tingling all over with excitement

635am i decide to stop tossing and turning in bed, turn on the lights and change into golfing gear

645am i'm out the door and waiting for a cab (grrr wait till its past 7 to get a cab), i almost give up to go home and crawl into bed. I remember that i'm wearing earrings today and feel confident and sexy

715am i reach the club and order breakfast. I feel proud that my determination to practice hard is coming back, nevermind that i haven't slept. At least i'm out of my pyjamas and besides i've slept about 12 hours each of the past few days i've been moping.

744am i'm done with my yummy thick cut kaya toast and am about to start my day of efficient golf practice

745am it starts to rain. A difference of just one minute decides my schedule. I'll update my blog first. The wind is blowing through the clubhouse and i feel chilly (weird cos i'm always sweating so much here). small rain drops fly with the wind and land on my phone screen. But nothing can stop my determination today.

It is my determination to start on part 2 of hard work. Determination to improve my golf. Determination not to let all the obstacles i faced prevent me from moving forward. Determination not to be afraid.

I finished watching taiwan series 'my queen'. One sentence i really found meaningful is that you can choose how you feel in just one second. Choosing to be optimistic takes just a second, choosing to give up on yourself also takes a second. Why not make the choice that will enrich your life.

Make the choice of loving yourself today. Do something that makes you feel happy. Even if you feel like nothing is going well, that no one appreciates anything you do, love yourself. don't wait for others to show they love you. If you don't love yourself who will??

I know it really isn't easy to find loving emotions when you're in a low place. I've been there. But don't worry, if i can do it, so can you !

Sending you love, wherever you are.

golf watches- it's time for a ladies version don't you think !

AZX Golf watch

check out this golf watch that functions like a normal watch but helps you keep track of all your strokes, putts and pars for each hole. it stores your score for up to 50 rounds of golf. it provides you the usual functions of day and date, daily alarm, hourly chime signal, stopwatch and backlight. it is even water resistant for up to 100 feet so you can wear it from the office to the golf course without worry. it's water resistance even allows you to dive into the pond to look for the golf ball you hit into the water without having to remove it haha

what i really love is that it comes in a golf ball casing which is oh so cute !!

the only thing i don't like is that it has such a retro look to it. it really reminds me of the black G-shock watch my dad wore for 20 years and finally got a new one about 5 years ago. don't they know that more and more women are playing golf now ! those that find it hard to keep track of their score will really appreciate this product if they had a ladies version. they could make the watch look more stylish or at least more ladylike in brighter colors such as pink or yellow ?

Suunto G6 golf watch

This is an advanced version of the watch above because it not only helps you keep track of your score but also has swing analysis to calculate your tempo, rhythm and length of the swing. cool eh. why is it cool you might wonder... it's because you get feedback after every swing that helps you identify your best shots and develop muscle memory. After your practice session, you can even link up to the Suunto Golf Manager PC software that comes with the G6 Pro to identify areas that need improvement

i find it very sad that they don't make girly versions for these watches. i'm gonna add these watches to my wish list even though i can't seem to find the AZX one for sale online. hmmm. anyone up for getting me a surprise present ?? if it makes a difference, i'd settle for the cheaper one !!

i hope one day i can co-create a nice ladies version maybe in a white strap with some bling ? diamonds ??

comparison between the bushnell 1500 and bushnell 1600

i've just ordered a bushnell 1500 slope edition !!! whoopie !! i hope the total comes up to less than i would have to pay if i bought it offline. although the slope edition isn't allowed in tournaments, it really will be very useful for my golf practice.

anyway i was researching online, and i found that although the bushnell 1600 is a newer model, its specifications do not differ from the older 1500 model. it seems that the 1600 has a better battery door that was improved in the new model after reviews about the 1500. i think that if you aren't too picky about the look, holding the battery door in place with a rubber band or sticky tape should be fine. The cheaper price should justify the sleek-ness of its look.

however, if you can afford it, i'd suggest you get the bushnell 1600 instead since the newer model also has better accuracy on longer distances.

i'm looking forward to getting my new laser in the mail soon !! will update when i start using it !

happy is the day i skip and hop

one day depressed and unable to crawl out of bed, one day happy till i'm skipping and hopping away.

i'm excited because i finally see some hope today in my golf.
it was pouring rain and the water droplets were flying into my face into the driving range. there were less than 5 people there, but i was ferociously hitting ball after ball and oblivious to myself getting wet.

this is because because because... i was hitting my irons well today. if you have been reading my posts and following my journey, you should know that the thing that has made me the most depressed is my poor iron shots.

Here's my thought process that helped me hit so well today
1. i stand too far away from the ball
-i tried to make sure my arms are hanging down from my shoulders instead of being outstretched.
(even though the club is nearer to the body, make sure the butt of the club is pointing towards your belt buckle)

2. my balance has been really bad lately
-i focused more on keeping my lower body (hips and knees and feet) connected with the upper body (shoulders, arms and wrists) so that all parts of my body are in sync and swing as one piece instead of getting disconnected

how to play golf with more confidence

confidence and passion increase with ability. therefore, the greater your golfing ability, the more confidence you will have on and off the golf course.

confidence starts even before you address the ball. when you're looking at your target and setting up, there is no doubt or fear of shanking the shot, hitting it short or entering a hazard. then when you are about to hit the ball, confidence means you have conviction to impact, compress the ball and let it soar down the target line.

everyone wants to play with confidence. Doctor Bob Rotella wrote a book called "Golf is a Game of Confidence".

It's easy to play golf confidently when you're playing well and shooting low scores. But how do you do it when you're in a bad patch and haven't been playing well??

If my opening statement is true, then the opposite must be true too. that your confidence decreases when your ability to play good golf drops.

If like me, you've experienced a time when your golf seems to be at its worst and you couldn't ever play any lousier scores, then this is dedicated to you. the process may not be easy but its definitely worth it because when your confidence returns, playing golf will be so much more fun and the improved golfing score will be oh so sweet. mmm

step 1: think about something that is going well in your life
it might not be related to golf
eg: a loving family, a pet that always makes you smile

step 2: analyse all aspects of your game and list down which is the worst area and why
currently, my worst aspect is my iron shots

step 3: compare the worst area to other aspects of the game
you should find that the part of the golf game you are most dissatisfied with is only one aspect of the whole golf game which is made up of so many areas

step 4 : focus on the parts of your game that are going well
for me, i am driving the ball longer off the tee and i rarely miss a fairway over the 18 holes

step 5: don't think too much into the situation
its all temporary ! things will definitely turn around soon. the less of your thought you put into the bad things, the more likely that they will go away

look forward to good times my friends !

i resolve never to give up on myself and my golf again

i know it probably sounds funny when you hear a girl saying she likes housework because in this day and age especially in singapore, it doesn't seem that easy to find girls who are first of all willing to do housework and even if they do it, seldom do they actually enjoy it. maybe because my mom was never a house-work type of woman, good habits of cleaning up my room and study table were never really cultivated since young. and we always had house help so my room was never so messy. even when i was studying in melbourne, i didn't have as much stuff as i do in my house now. so i find my room often getting cluttered easily. probably due to a lack of a good system to put my stuff when i come home such as my gym bag, things i buy etc

i just cleared up the basket of clean clothes that have been lying around for about a week. and then i swept and mopped the floor. waah i feel so refreshed seeing my floor clear of stuff. i read that because i'm born in the year of the snake (according to the chinese calendar), i'm more likely to clutter up the floor, leave things lying all over the place such that only a snake would be able to slither and maneuvre through the mess.

anyway, i find that my life gets more and more out of control when my room is messy. and that includes my golfing progress. but i find it very very troublesome to do laundry. first you have to put the clothes in the machine, take them out to hang (which reminds me that i need to go do that now) and then take them in the next day, whenever i'm next free, or when someone else wants to hang their clothes. troublesome !! cos i then have to fold/iron/hang up/organise the clean clothes into my various cupboards after that. so many steps. grrr

however, the benefit of doing all this and cleaning up my room is that i always feel better and more clear-headed when i see a neat and clean room. Therefore, i resolve to keep my floor clear of stuff and maintain neat-ness in my room. because the look of my room affects my mood, this resolution directly means that i resolve never to give up on myself and my golf again. it's a tough journey but i cannot give up.

within in 24 hours: a whirlwind of emotions

this golfing journey has put me in a whirlwind of emotions. a seesaw of ups and downs.
i've experienced my lowest point in life where i just feel battered and bruised with no more hope of ever playing professional golf. and then just as i thought i had no more tears to cry because of it, i started to realise that i needed a new plan in order to get myself started on my next golf training chapter. i went to sleep slightly revitalised and was starting to see some light at the end of this tiny dark tunnel. in 5 hours, my dad and i were supposed to go and practice and i found it yet again impossible to get out of bed. i really didn't want to go face the fact that i was playing crap golf. but i decided to have another try and hope for a miracle. sorry no miracle for me today. i felt so so frustrated with everything in my golf game. just as i thought i was losing all hope, tears flowed from my eyes. and i knew that i still felt strongly passionate about this game and since all the sadness, frustration and anger are part and parcel of life, it must also be part and parcel of golf.

all this happened within 24 hours mind you.

what happened to all the optimism and eagerness from 2 months ago? how did my spirit sink so low so quickly? i'd like to think its burnout but how can you burn out without having burnt anything at all ?

it is said that you can judge a person by the way he/she plays golf. i guess it also applies to the attitude towards golf and whether you give up on the game easily.

for me, i know i love the game and i know playing excellent golf, even scratch handicap is something achievable. i know that its my most logical progress in life because i really feel so correct when i'm playing golf (if describing that makes any sense to you)

how come it seemed so easy to move from being so optimistic and excited about improving my golf game to becoming so dejected and moody. then how come now i just find it extremely difficult to jump from being utterly disappointed in my lack of improvement to being that cheerful smily girl who never gave up.

best way out of a low point in life

after being stuck in this lousy place of playing bad golf and not really knowing what to do about it, i discovered that the way out of this low point is not to sleep all day and refuse to face up to whats happening. the way out of it is to plan for the next step. plan for how to move forward in the next chapter of this journey.

but sometimes it really isn't easy when you're feeling down. it almost feels like everything isn't going your way and you start to descend down this spiral of unhappiness.

This is my remedy to picking yourself up
-first think about something that makes you happy
-go out and do things that you enjoy or go out with people you feel happy with (for me its going out with my sister to look at cute things or get cheap bargains)
-then sit down reassess that your situation isn't all as bad as it seems because everything else is actually really good in your life
-come up with a plan on what needs working on, how you will go about doing it and how much time will be needed

hope this can help anyone who is feeling really low and can't seem to get out of feeling lousy. Smile and Look forward to good times ahead !!

its tougher than you read in the books

you read that often golfers deprove after trying to implement something new in their swing or golf game. but no one prepares for exactly HOW mentally challenging the process really is.

especially for me who is trying so hard to improve my game, it can really be very demoralising to see my golfing scores stagnate and even become worse.

i think i'm a mentally strong person in that i don't give up easily and am always very optimistic. i was very proud when jonathon praised me for having fighting spirit. i really don't like to lose. it must have been cultivated from my days in cedar girls' secondary where doing our best was part of the school culture. we were all for girl power and really cheered our hearts out during competitions.

I was playing in a match play against a very strong opponent and i realised that i really need to toughen up mentally if i want to continue on this journey towards improving my golf and being a scratch handicapper. I've learnt that it is so much easier to give up and just slump into laziness or enter a state of 'heck care already'

on the first nine, it was already such a tough fight. everytime she won a hole i would fight very very hard to win the next hole. by the 8th hole i felt so exhausted because i wasn't playing very well but i was really pushing myself to hit a good iron shot and chip and putt better. i really wanted to give up because i was 2 down. but then i tried to think about my secondary school days and how we never gave up until the last deciding monent. and i managed to find more energy and determination to keep fighting. by the last three holes we were in a 'dormie' which means i was 3 down with 3 more holes to play.

i managed to win the next two holes and we were on the last tee, i was one down with one to play. and i really wasn't hoping for much. i just wanted to get a par to end the game well. and hopefully if i parred it then i would finish 18 holes all square and maybe we'd play sudden death. she sunk an amazing biride putt and i was going for par. and that was it.

it really sucks to lose. the feeling where you know you just weren't playing at your best. its this annoying nibbling feeling inside that just makes you sad, frustrated, hopeful all at once. i know the loss shouldn't be such a big deal because i really didn't play well. the fact that my 93 managed to play her 80 all the way to the last hole is already a mean feat. yet i also feel hopeful knowing that at my standard, and putting in more substantial practice and hard work, i can only improve

Bra that turns into golf putting mat

there seems to be problems with watching youtube embedded videos at this point. so click this link instead to watch the video

this bra actually turns into a golf putting mat !

The "Nice Cup in Bra" Triumph can be rolled out into a 1.5-meter green putting mat.
Players hit the ball into the breast cups to score ! When you sink the putt, a voice from in the bra says, "Nice in!" The bra features extra pockets for storing golf balls and tees as well as a detachable flag pin that doubles as a pencil. It also comes with a matching pink skirt and briefs, which when opened, turns into a flag that says "Be quiet."

it's really sexy but i wonder when they would pass a ruling that women are allowed to wear skimpy clothing on the golf course ??

i think it actually looks more like a corset. so maybe it should be the corset that turns into a putting mat !

the idea is a good one but its definitely not the first unpractical invention created by the japanese

it is actually quite a sexy piece of clothing to wear out but can you imagine all the illogical situations you would actually take it off to use it for putting practice??

1. in your office
take it off to cool your body on a hot day and get some putting practice at the same time

2. at the putting green when there are too many people practicing
all the holes on the putting green are being used and you don't want to squeeze with all the men who are staring at your outfit ( refer to the model below)

3. at a dinner party
the guys are talking about golf and they suggest a putting competition to determine who's the best golfer. you provide the solution for the inavailability of putting green in the house

my advice to all female golfers: never wear such a short skirt to play golf unless you INTEND to show off your underwear (or lack of underwear) to your flight mates and others from all over the golf course because those men on the other fairway will definitely be trying their best to get a good look when you address the ball

my advice to men: the easiest thing to teach a novice golfer is how to putt and good putting can save you alot of strokes on the golf course. what better way to encourage your wife or girlfriend to improve her putting by buying one of this !

this is a novelty bra created by triumph that highlight social trends. this one is in response to the growing number of women in japan picking up golf.

ps: if you are planning on getting one. BUY TWO INSTEAD !! because you'll need one to wear while you use the other to putt (unless you're buying it for someone else and hope it'll be taken off to putt nude)

feeling lethargic

my dad has this theory that when you feel tired its either because you need to do some exercise or you've slept too much. i've found that they both apply.

i was feeling very driven and motivated to work hard on my golf and especially the short game but i must say i have getting more and more demoralised by my inability to play well with my new irons. when my left wrist hurt too much till i couldn't even grip the golf club, i took a one week break off golf and didn't touched my clubs for 7 days.
that brought me into this lazy slump where i've been sleeping about 10 hours a day and lazing around at home.

ok working on my blog and facebook page should not be considered lazing but i mean lazy in the sense that i'm not out there working on my golf. i think the lack of activity is making me more and more lazy.

i believe in the power of momentum and when i'm really in the heat of practicing my short game i can practice for hours at millenium and not feel tired. but now that i've lost that momentum, i'm finding it hard to even change out of my pyjamas or leave the house. i just feel like eating maggi mee for my meals

i have the semi-finals of the match play competition tomorrow. hope my putting practice on my golf putting mat at home will pay off tomorrow. i think my opponent is a strong player.

Bob Rotella: enter a competition thinking you are the best until proven otherwise
(don't be intimidated by others)

i can do it !!

if i make a golfing song and video i'd use this style

B.o.B - Nothin' On You ft. Bruno Mars [Official Video]

i love how the background is static and they're moving but there's this white thing around them. it has a very sesame street feel. maybe sesame street doesn't use this style anymore, i'm referring to the end section where everyone is dancing. ok maybe i'm outdated.

we could start off with pictures of me and my golfing friends. the rest of it i'd choose a golf course background. one with trees and one of the fairway. sounds so exciting !

anyone up for writing me a golf song and helping me with the video ?

check out the making of the video (created by ethan lader)
in case you read this one day ethan, i love this video !!

great cos its filmed on a white background ! the video is actually a collage of torn paper where the images of the girls are printed out and torn to create the collage.
ahhhhh the walking down the street is done by walking on a WHITE treadmill. WHITE. wow is it just me ? am i the only video making retard around that is amazed by this ??

the best part about the song is that it's catchy and the song is about beautiful girls

go here to view the lyrics of this song if you love it like i do !

funny story in the trees

you know how annoying it is to hit a bad shot and have it land in the rough and stop in front of a tree giving you only about a foot of space to swing to get your ball out ??

i do, because my golf has been very 'natural' the past two weeks. when i say natural i mean getting close to nature ie. the trees, bushes, water.

well just the other day i was in one such situation on an index one par four. a really long hole and i had to punch my ball out. obviously i wanted it to go as far as possible so i decided to bring my club as far back as possible without hitting the tree and stop there to muster up as much energy as i could to come and punch the ball out.

as i was building up energy in my body and trying to direct it at the ball, i let out a loud fart as i was about to contact the ball. sort of like when you're in the toilet and trying to force shit out and let out gas instead.
anyway, the ball ended up where i wanted it to and i got a good laugh at myself in the trees at the same time. win-win situation. good thing no one was around to hear me heehee

cathay cup match play april 2010

i won the quarter finals of the cathay cup match play today :)
won 3 up with 1 to play

didn't play as well as i had hoped but then i haven't really touched my golf clubs for almost a week. my iron shots were at least getting distance but accuracy was hard to predict. i would either hook the ball or hit it way right and if i tried to compensate by aiming more left or more right, i still didn't get the ball to where i wanted it to go.

had only one green on regulation which is far from my goal of 12 out of 16 holes
32 putts. not too bad
played overall gross 93

was really trying to focus on keeping my right knee pointing inwards while rotating my hips on the backswing in order to get more body coil

currently, my tee shots are still the best part of my game which is quite useless if my short game isn't too great. although i must say i can't complain because i was actually chipping and putting quite well, just didn't chip it near enough to get par and didn't putt it well enough either

at least i still have a chance to fight back and play an even better score on thursday. playing against a 9 handicapper so i'll get 6 strokes from index 1 to 6.

i'm just gonna work on bringing my BEST GAME to win !

think about putting at a good speed for the ball to drop into the hole based on the line that you are aiming for :)

if anyone reading this has a match play coming up, all the best !!

cathay cup match play april 2010

playing in a match play competition against a 30 handicapper tomorrow afternoon on the bukit course. i probably have to give her one stroke each hole. it sounds quite scary and stressful because i am usually the one receiving strokes from other people because i have one of the highest handicaps in the A division. i think they have combined us with the B division ladies due to lack of participants in the competition haha

i haven't touched my clubs for almost a week now and i'm hoping for the best tomorrow. been having a dilemma whether to use my new clubs or old clubs to play. after much deliberation, i have decided to play with my old irons and woods but my new driver which has been giving me very good distance off the tee-box (happy happy)

i'll need to warm up at the range with my old irons first to get re-accustomed with them. wish me all the best ! and i hope to share good news tomorrow :)

arnold palmer golfing wear for ladies

remember how i was so amazed to find great golfing polo tees at arnold palmer ??
well, i decided to do a bit of research on him and i found that that the colors on the signature 'Arnold Palmer' umbrella logo are actually his favourite colors ! or at least they were when we first set up his empire in 1961. the logo being an open golf umbrella done in four colors; red, yellow, white and green

Arnold Palmer young style for ladies focuses in japanese style ladies casual wear and uses bright colours to create a young and trendy look. They have a wide range of merchandise and accessories including ladies polos ,tees , blouses , crop pants , skirt and dress as well as small leather goods , handbags and socks.

Arnold Palmer's ION Orchard boutique is located at #B2-50.

go to Arnold Palmer Ion Orchard for more information. they should include opening hours on their page but its not stated somehow

i must say that the staff there are very friendly and patient so its definitely a shop worth checking out for female golfers.

on one hand i feel so good for sharing this wonderful brand with others but i also have the feeling that if more people start looking for golfing wear there, then maybe i won't be able to find my size next time ! haha

left wrist injury is nothing serious. phew

managed to go get my left wrist checked out today. i went to visit doctor teo my TCM *traditional chinese medicine* doctor.

he says that its a very normal type of injury for sports people. something to do with the muscles and tendons reacting when you hit an improper golf shot. probably because i had a slight injury and didn't let it rest, the muscles got tighter and tighter till it was so painful.

he did a massage on my left forearm and hand and within just half an hour, i felt so much better. it's only been 12 hours since i saw him and the pain has decreased by 80% ! whoo hooo !!

i think i have an amazing body. everytime i get a slight injury or rash, i take a shorter time to recover than the doctor says. i think doctors always say a longer time just to be safe.

eg 1: when i had the terrible rash. doctor said it'd take about 1 to 2 weeks to recover and then to continue taking the medicine for 5 days after the rash and itch goes away. took only 2 days for the rashes to totally go away and then i took the medicine for another 5 days :)

eg 2: when i jurt my right wrist, dr teo said i'd have to let it rest 2 weeks, but within 3 days the pain was all gone !

whoo hoo thanks wonderful body for being so good at recovering !

i have to rest from golf for 2-3 days at least so this weekend i'll be having a lot of time to do other golf related things like create more golfing collages on polyvore and taking more golfing fashion pictures.

i'm looking out for cheap polo tees so i can't print some designs on them as an experiment and also to take more pictures ! wheee

even when i'm injured and can't play golf, i am grateful for the experience of learning about my injury and having free time to do other things than just training golf the whole day. i'll also be working more on the mental aspect of my golf game.

female golfers have a challenge because they have boobs

i find that as a female golfer, boobs are a tricky area. on one hand they help us look beautiful and feminine, some might even say graceful. but on the other hand they do form a sort of restriction when you set up because they are obstructions between your arms. i wear sport bras because they flatten the chest and allow my arms to swing through more freely but i'm currently experimenting with getting a more feminine golf look. the main issue i have is getting over the feeling that i'm sticking my chest out so much like as though i'm saying to the world "hey check out my boobies" because in actual fact i don't think people actually think of it that way. breasts are just a natural part of being a woman and regardless of size, i should embrace them and be proud of what i have

i find that sport bras help to flatten the chest and lessen some of the problem but then those without padding create the chance that you will expose your two points. haha if you know what i'm referring to. it may not not be an issue in the western culture where it is seen as sexy and provocative, but in asian culture, it is often frowned upon. i myself think that it is inappropriate and attracts unwanted attention which becomes distracting while playing golf. there are sport bras that do offer padding but they are not durable and the padding shifts out of position or loses shape after being thrown in the washing machine. maybe i'm supposed to hand wash them?

sport bras provide support and prevents the breasts from swinging around and just basically being a distraction

lately, i've been experimenting and trying to get used to wearing bras made for sport. they make me feel a bit insecure as i feel like my chest is sticking out alot when i set up. but maybe i'm just not used to it yet. other female golfers don't seem to be bothered by it so i guess it shouldn't be an issue for me. i'm reading into it too much maybe.

however i find that bras, sport bras and bras designed for sport are much like clothes in that sometimes its hard to find a good fit. maybe because there are limited brands at a reasonable price i would be willing to pay, i find it difficult to find many models that fit me properly.

the problem i had with the sport bras were that the straps could be a bit short and sometimes they felt like they were cutting into my shoulders, yet going up a size would make it loose around the chest area. so confusing. problems i face in looking for a bra designed for sport would be that they make sizes in S M L and not so much according to the cup size or bustline like those in normal bras that state two parts. the number and the cup eg:34C. the other problem would be that they are so overpriced. yes they are specially designed but i wouldn't pay $60 for something that doesn't even fit me perfectly
